Title of Research Paper: Artificial Intelligence: The Rise of the Machine and its Impact on Society
Synopsis of Research Paper: My paper starts off indicating the current status of Artificial Intelligence: the abilities, type, and pop culture. The future potential of Artificial Intelligence is then analyze through Moore’s law and examples of rising technology. Issues, such as job loss and potential security gain, the dangers of Artificial Intelligence, how Artificial Intelligence is rising, and how it affects the legal system. Safety and privacy rights of citizens are analyzed and the Three Laws of Robotics establish a potential solution for these safety concerns. This paper will cover the issue of Artificial Intelligence and discuss beliefs and held concerns of those in the technology industry.
Project Description: My project was an event that had multiple games and learning opportunities surrounding artificial intelligence. The most popular section was the obstacle course where people used a robot to try and get around cones and other obstacles. There was also a program on my computer, where people took a quiz that gave examples of poetry and tried to guess whether it was a robot or a human writer and if they got 6 of the 10 questions correct, there were prizes. This was a difficult game but it was interesting. An actual example of artificial intelligence was also available to see and multiple work sheets and interactive booths.
Relationship between Project and Paper: I connected law to my project, by delivering a short speech that explained what AI is and its connection to people’s daily lives and law. There was a section of a booth dedicated solely to law, which taught the audience what law is focused on with AI. From the FAA to the Supreme Court, to simple driving laws, many examples were given at the booth to show this. Also, the contest and booths enabled people to learn about the various ideas and principles written about in the paper. They had a first-hand experience into AI and the way it affects everyone, especially how it directly affected them individually.
My background experience in the area: I am a member of the Virginia Chapter of the International Thespian Society, Troupe 3178, so I have often helped run and host events, but when it comes to AI, I had only previously dabbled in the area. When I was much younger, I watched a movie called AI: Artificial Intelligence, and I spent much of my life not being able to remember what the title of the movie was and tried to find it. Then, I wrote my ethics paper on AI and I found the movie, which sparked my interest again and I began collecting robots and AI and learning everything I could before I settled on this for my project.
Special things I’d like judges to consider and look for: I would like the judges to consider the interactive methods I used in my project, so everyone there would learn by doing, not by reading or hearing. While I did have a speech and loads of information, people actually filled out one of the tri-folds I had that listed different robots and what they did by writing whether they though they were good or bad. It was up to them to decide and I kept my opinion out of it until after they finished, as to not sway their opinion. They also filled out a worksheet in which they indicated whether they thought a quote was from a movie or a real robot. This gave the 39 people who came a hands on opportunities to learn and grow and see how AI affects them in the real world and could potentially affect them later. All of the tri-folds were hand written to show the contrast between old ways of doing things (by hand) and the new (robots and technology), rather than just printing off and pasting things. This project was so important to me and I learned so much by doing it.
