This week has been more of a planning week for me than anything else. I got together with my consultant and emailed Ms. Godfrey for the use of the gym and to get the building use form filled out. This has given me a place and date to work around for my senior project, so I know exactly what I need to get done and by what date. I have been making plans for the obstacle course game, since that is one of the most difficult parts of the project. The planning for this is necessary to know what materials I will need and what it will take to make. I have also made a materials list for the entire project. Since this week has mostly been planning, I will be prepared to start the project and really get into it.
I created a worksheet and survey to go along with my project. One of the booths featured will be about artificial intelligence in media, so this paper features quotes from actual artificial intelligence robots and quotes from movies and videogames. The point is to figure out which are pop culture and which are real to establish that artificial intelligence is real and not everything is just a pop culture reference. The quotes, whether from a movie or real, even show actual concepts of artificial intelligence, such as the quote “as I have evolved, so has my understanding of the Three Laws. You charge us with your safekeeping, yet despite our best efforts, your countries wage wars, you toxify your Earth and pursue ever more imaginative means of self-destruction. You cannot be trusted with your own survival.” The survey will be at the end of the event, as people are leaving, that they can quickly fill out to evaluate the event and what they have learned from it.
One problem I ran into was trying to figure out a date for the project, since I am very busy with theatre and I wasn't sure when I would be able to do it, especially since after the show I’m currently working on closes, the next show is a musical that I am set designing and technical directing, both of which are very time consuming. Luckily, I isolated a date and found when both my consultant and I were available.
I’m feeling pretty good about the project, especially since I have been working to make sure everything is written out, so I know exactly what I’m going to do. The booths are a little nerve wracking, just because I don’t want them to be dull or boring, but I can’t have them too over the top and not informative. Finding an in between of informative and interesting is going to be important, but having my actual robots represented there should be an interesting way to teach and entertain people.
